Therapists for college students near Boulder, CO
Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but with the right one by your side, true healing can begin. As a clinical social worker specializing in individual psychotherapy, my goal is to make that process feel a little less daunting by offering a collaborative, supportive space where you can show up as you are. My work centers on older adolescents and adults navigating mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, as well as those moving through life transitions, grief, loss, or anticipated loss. As a queer clinician, providing identity-affirming care is also central to my practice, particularly for those exploring sexuality and gender, or who face systemic barriers to self-expression and self-actualization. If you choose to work together and the connection feels right, I'm confident we can do meaningful work. My approach is strengths-based, relational, and grounded in a person-in-environment perspective, which means I consider you within the greater context of your life, your relationships, and the systems that shape your daily experience. All of my work is rooted in a social justice framework, and a deep belief in every person's inherent dignity and worth. Together, we'll explore the events and relationships — both past and present — that inform how you move through the world, building deeper self-understanding and self-compassion along the way. You can expect a warm, accepting, and responsive environment where the therapeutic approach is tailored to your unique needs and preferences. That often means blending meaningful self-reflection with a growing toolkit of practical skills and techniques you can carry with you outside of our sessions. Before becoming a therapist, nearly a decade was spent working as a professional musician, an experience that instilled a deep appreciation for the courage and vulnerability that authentic self-expression requires. Sitting with our emotions, sharing them, and exploring them can feel scary, but it can also be genuinely beautiful, opening doors to connection and self-discovery that might otherwise stay closed. At my core, connecting with people has always been what drives me. That's why authentic curiosity, empathy, and an open mind are things I bring to every interaction. My education, lived experiences, and professional background all converge in service of one goal: creating a space where you can work toward better understanding yourself and expressing who you truly are. Outside of the therapy room, you'll find me singing, traveling, or cooking and baking for the people I love. Shared meals with friends and family are something I treasure deeply, as are deep belly laughs and adventures with my husband and our dog, Bagel.
My approach to mental health counseling and high performance psychology does not focus simply on getting rid of challenges and difficulty, but rather aspires to honor what is good and right about you, and what makes each day worth living according to your beliefs, identities, values, and enriching relationships. Ultimately, I hope to help students like you move towards empowering the identities and values most important to you, building enriching relationships, and thriving in your chosen passions. I offer in person services in Lawrence, KS, and telehealth services across 42 states (https://psypact.gov/page/psypactmap). I have extensive experience and passion working with undergraduate and graduate students, including student-athletes, and students who identify as autistic and/or have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. My aim is to provide a space that invites exploration of challenging yet vital places of growth in the service of what is most important to you in your life and performance space. In particular, I love supporting students' resilience to shame ("not enoughness"), self-criticism, pressure to be perfect, social and performance anxiety, body image concerns, grief and loss, panic, and trauma. At my core, I am inspired by feminist and multicultural approaches to healing that seek to interrupt systems of oppression that impact you. From that core, I use trauma-informed, evidence-based methods like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and self-compassion to support you in taking action towards what matters even in the presence of challenge. Finding a good fit is so vital to your counseling or sport psychology wants, and can be such an emotionally taxing journey. After an initial meeting, if you don't feel there is a great fit between us, I will work hard to connect you to people who may be a better fit for you. Let's make this process as stress-free and successful for your needs as we can.

"My life looks completely different than I thought it would, and I don't know what to do with that." "I feel like I should be over it by now, but I'm not." "I'm tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix." "My mind won't stop, and I'm exhausted from trying to keep up with it." Whatever brought you here, you don't have to figure it out alone. Naming what's underneath the pain can be a relief in itself. From there, we can begin listening to what's in your heart — clarifying what you value and hope for — and working together toward the changes that bring healing, meaning, and joy. I am passionate about working with those navigating anxiety, depression, trauma — including spiritual trauma — grief, and health-related challenges. The relationship we build is the foundation of this work. I use a person-centered, trauma-informed approach with CBT, bringing warmth and deep respect for your story. Your goals and your pace guide the process. If this sounds like what you've been looking for, I'd welcome the chance to connect. College is like a pressure cooker of compounding transitions. On top of demanding coursework, you are likely navigating the intense world of identity exploration. This can mean a lot of things; from the deeply personal layers of discovering your sexual orientation and gender identity, to simply figuring out who you are as an individual and what you actually want out of romantic and sexual relationships. As a queer therapist, I intimately understand the unique difficulties of navigating these shifts. I have walked this path myself, personally navigating profound changes in my own sexual orientation and gender identity, and I know how isolating it can feel to explore these core parts of yourself while trying to maintain your GPA. It is incredibly common to feel stuck in a major or career track that feels entirely wrong, paralyzed by the fear of starting over. I know that panic firsthand. I spent years working as a software developer before a season of deep introspection and counseling gave me the courage to make a massive pivot. Today, I am in a field I love deeply; one that brings me genuine passion far beyond a paycheck. If you are feeling misaligned with your current path, I offer specialized career counseling to help you cut through the external expectations, decode your true strengths, and confidently identify a professional field that actually fits your authentic self. Whether you are drowning in academic stress, untangling painful relationship patterns, processing trauma, or facing a complete directional pivot, you do not have to figure it out alone. Together, we will address the practical mechanics of stress management while diving deep into the relational dynamics that keep you stuck. I provide an encouraging, explicitly inclusive, and safe space where no topic is too messy or taboo. Your college years can feel incredibly destabilizing, but our work together will help you build the self-trust and clarity needed to step out of survival mode and into a life that is genuinely, authentically your own.

In today’s fast-paced world, many people are expected to keep pushing forward while quietly carrying the emotional and physical burden of chronic illness. I am passionate about supporting individuals navigating chronic health conditions and the psychological challenges that often accompany them, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relational distress, and disenfranchised grief. I believe in a holistic path to healing; a path where the mind, body and spirit is embraced in the work that we will do together. I primarily use a combination of IFS, mindfulness, SE, hypnotherapy, CBT, ACT, and narrative therapies. Over the last 20 years I have worked extensively in a variety of healthcare settings including long-term care, hospice, and an acute care hospital setting. Recently, I worked as a medical social worker in the ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic where I supported patients and their loved ones in navigating the unknown. I also have experience in supporting those who suffer from more rare illnesses including autoimmune diseases, multiple chemical sensitivities, mast cell activation syndrome, chronic inflammatory response syndrome, and chronic Lyme. Working in a variety of healthcare settings has provided me with a unique lens into the many needs and adversities that individuals encounter in the US healthcare system. Through my experiences I have seen firsthand how connected our minds and bodies are, which led me to study interventions and techniques that can help manage a multitude of symptoms such as anxiety, pain, GI distress, and much more. I also have additional training in trauma-informed care and am now a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I work hard to find the right combination of therapeutic interventions to meet each individual's needs.

MY PHILOSOPHY: As a Counselor, Coach and Ayurvedic Consultant I approach the therapeutic process from a holistic view point. Many of today’s Mental, Physical and Social Illnesses stem from a lack of integration-disintegration, resulting in persons dissociated from themselves, the community and the environment. My focus is on the whole person, with special emphasis on how the mind is connected directly to the body and how a person thinks, feels and acts. Emphasis will be on wellness, with symptoms seen as calls to self-realization. MY SPECIALTIES: Individual counseling services for disorders such as: Anxiety Spectrum disorders like: Panic Attacks, PTSD, OCD, Social anxiety, Phobias, IBS, Stress management and Worry; Depressive disorders like: Mania, Bipolar disorder, Post-partum depression, and Depression; Sleep disorders like Insomnia and sleep/wake disorders Group practice: I have a team of counselors who work with me. Whether due to stormy family dynamics, unstable relationships, first-gen, LGBTQ, 'adulting', or having to navigate the never-ending COVID pandemic - life can become unmanageable! In the past five years with the University of Florida, I've had the tremendous joy of helping people (help themselves) through these storms - recent/old trauma, loving-and-conflictual relationships, coming to more peace and power with one's identity, more clarity and success at academics and career aspirations. You can count on me to be authentic and open, to come from a place of tenderness, warmth, and humor. Based in genuine, caring listening I try to offer everything possible to help you achieve lasting change. I'm a licensed psychologist (Hawaii - where I lived for years, Florida and Colorado), and am familiar with key areas of the scientific, empirical work and helps articulate trauma, anxiety and depression - and this points powerfully to what we can do to heal. My scholarly research and clinical experiences led to the completion of a book, “The Bruised Heart”. This book provides both in-depth information on the science of emotional healing and multiple clinical examples of real people (clients) whom I was so fortunate to know. I'm especially a good fit for anyone that may be (or called) “hypersensitive”, anyone who longs for authentic friendship, anyone who feels destabilized, perhaps following a break-up or stemming from chaotic family patterns. I love working with gifted and high IQ individuals, for example, with medical students, post docs, artists, and musicians who are highly intelligent but “underperforming” and simply suffering. And I have a passion for first-gen students, and has worked with many from, for example, Colombia, Brazil and Iran. Additionally, I think I am a strong fit for anyone who passionate about psychospiritual approaches to healing, growth and transformation. There are very realistic, nonabstract, doable ways to integrate forms of meditation into one’s busy life and this can be a gamechanger. Finally, I supervise third-year psychiatry residents and routinely assist clients in exploring medication options.
Hello, I'm Elissa. Life can be challenging, and managing relationships can sometimes feel overwhelming. But you don't have to face these difficulties alone. Feelings of loneliness, loss of purpose, distance from loved ones, and grief over lost loved ones or unfulfilled dreams are common experiences. In children, behaviors often signal underlying struggles they are facing. I utilize a client-centered, solution-focused approach, incorporating techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing. For children, I also employ play therapy, which has proven effective in addressing their unique needs. These methods help you develop new tools for your 'Life Tool Box,' empowering you to navigate life's challenges more effectively. I hold a Master's degree (MA) and am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. My areas of specialization include family relationships, children's mental and behavioral health, anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, and trauma. With my experience and expertise, I aim to create a supportive and understanding environment where you can feel heard and validated. Working with me means embarking on a journey towards healing and growth. Whether through telehealth or in-person sessions at my Alamosa office, I am here to support you every step of the way. If you are ready to move forward, please reach out to set up an appointment. Together, we can work towards a brighter, more fulfilling future.
