Stress in college can be difficult to manage at times because of the change in responsibilities of being away from home, less structure to routines, worrying about grades, worrying about finances, all while trying to establish new connections and build relationships in a new place. These stressors often lead to anxiety and depression. The good news is that you don’t have to manage alone! We can work together to help you learn the tools you need to maximize your strengths, and be at peace, while thriving in a busy college environment.

Throughout most of our culture boys are not given much opportunity to explore their inner worlds, identify and express emotions or encouraged to build supportive and robust social networks. As these boys become men it leaves them lacking skills to know when and how to reach out for support. This is where I come in. I help guide young men through life's challenges by teaching skills that will help them in all facets of their life. Tired of feeling stuck, alone and not knowing how or what to change. Book your free consult through my website and let's see if working together is the best next step for you. No need to go it alone anymore.

In each person's life a little rain must fall. At times, however, it may feel as though you are ill equipped to weather the storm. Gaining new coping skills, strengthening self-esteem and adopting new behaviors are just some of the possible outcomes of successful counseling. I consider it an honor to hear your story and work with you towards change. Whether you are battling anxiety, low self-esteem, going through a transition such as a career change or are dealing with past wounds, my hope is that you'll find a safe place to land as we work together to find a place that brings fulfillment and helps you reach your goals. I work from a person-centered approach, understanding that we each come with our own strengths and challenges. I offer a collaborative approach and encouraging space utilizing techniques from a variety of theoretical frameworks and evidenced-based treatments. I am certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. We will work together to identify your goals and make a plan on how to achieve them. I strive to listen empathetically and provide a judgement-free space to explore the things keeping you from living the life you desire. If you are ready to start experiencing life in a more fulfilling way, I would be happy to help you get started.

There is a part of me that feels extremely anxious. There is a part of me that gets really sad and down at times. There is a part of part of me that can hardly get out of bed some days. There is a part of me that needs to take care of everyone and everything. There is a part of me that wants to check out and escape from all the responsibilities I have. There is a part of me that thinks about dying and a part of me that wants to live. There is a part of me that …. How many times have we all had these feelings or thoughts that come over us that seem conflicting at times but represent how we are feeling in the moment. Understanding our parts even those that are contradictory, being able to validate and accept our parts, and creating balance and space for our parts mentally can be attained through therapy. Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is designed to allow us to heal from our pain, hurt, and fears by managing the parts that have been created out of our traumas. We have all experienced trauma in some form, and we all have parts that have been borne from those traumas. Parts that help us manage our daily lives and parts that may tend to disrupt our lives, but all of these parts are valid and serve some self-protective purpose and can be managed once they are understood. I collaborate with you to assist you in achieving your personal, therapeutic goals. Along the way, I focus on supporting you on your life journey from a strengths-based perspective. In order to change, you need to acknowledge what you do well, which we can discover together. It is important to notice the positive aspects of life while also addressing the things you wish to change. In my practice, I use evidence-based interventions (CBT, IFS-informed and expressive arts) and trauma-informed mindfulness practices. I have a background in psycho-education (to offer understanding of why we do what we do and skills for meaningful change), somatic (body) awareness, and a certification in spirituality integrated psychotherapy, which I draw on to assist you in living congruently and authentically in the life you are called to live.

Greetings! Thanks for being curious enough to learn more about me and courageous enough to invest in yourself through counseling. My name is Dr. Zoe Johnson. I am a licensed clinical social worker with a Ph.D. in education. My clinical and research expertise is specifically with, for, and on behalf of Black and Brown folks. It is an honor to bear witness to the triumphs and challenges of one’s lived experience. It is a privilege to reflect back to people the knowing, solutions, resilience, and joy that is ALREADY in them but blurred or buried by oppression, false narratives, and/or any number of messages meant to undermine our wellness, joy, and…liberation. I stand with folks as they journey through life -- the evolutions, changes, transitions, and also the routine, ordinary, mundane – supporting their well-being through accessible and personalized counseling services. I help high-achieving folks overcome perfectionism, imposter syndrome, people-pleasing, and anxiety so they can cultivate & sustain the healed and healthy life that they deserve & desire. I am Black affirming and Queer affirming. I support the full and beautiful spectrum of sexual, gender, and relational orientations. As a clinical social worker, I draw from a strengths-based perspective. I practice ethical principles based on social work’s core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. I am pleased to provide an accessible, personalized, boutique counseling experience that supports your well-being. If anything that I’ve said here resonates with you and you feel we would make a good team, let’s get started! I’m confident that our work together can help you cultivate the beautiful life that you deserve. Peace, love, and abundant joy to you – Dr. Zoe Johnson

Live and Thrive Counseling is my private practice in the community of Carrollton, Georgia. My office is close to the downtown area, but given the covid-19 changes in our daily living practices, my sessions are now fully online. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults that are struggling with depression, anxiety, poor body image, life transitions, self esteem issues, and trauma. As a registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200) and a licensed professional counselor, I enjoy using the cognitive behavioral modality, given its heavy emphasis on mindfulness and cognitive restructuring. In addition to CBT concepts, sessions often include breathing exercises and relaxation strategy practice that the client can eventually learn to practice on his or her own to promote positive self care and healthy coping skills.

Many of the students I work with are dealing with anxiety, stress, sadness, imposter syndrome, or self-doubt. Some are managing heavy academic loads while also worrying about their future. Others are trying to balance school with family expectations, friendships, and romantic relationships. Many feel like they’re supposed to "have it all together" but deep down feel lost, stuck, or just exhausted from trying so hard. In our work together, we focus on giving you a place where you don’t have to perform or pretend. Therapy is a place where you can be honest about what’s hard, get support in making sense of it, and start finding ways to feel more grounded, more confident, and more in charge of your own life — without the pressure to be perfect.

Making the decision to begin your therapeutic journey can feel overwhelming. My goal is to create a safe environment for you to grow and explore the things that have been holding you back. This could be feelings of anxiety, trauma, communication issues, difficulty establishing boundaries, toxic relationships with family or friends, or a major change in your life that has left you feeling confused or lost. Our work together will include identifying triggers and patterns of behavior, as well as recognizing roadblocks and reframing negative thoughts. I have some specialty areas including trauma, adoption, foster care, LGBTQIA, anxiety, relationships, parenting, and divorce. I've been trained in Training for Adoption Competency with C.A.S.E., EMDR, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other modalities. I emphasize collaboration in my sessions and provide a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere. I would be happy to discuss if I am the right person to work with you. Reaching out can be a difficult, but important step. Starting counseling takes a lot of courage and I commend you for beginning your search for a counselor by visiting this page.
