Therapists for college students near Ann Arbor, MI
When life goes differently than anticipated you may be left grieving, feeling disconnected from life, or from yourself. You deserve to have a compassionate space to process and honor your experiences. Together, we'll explore the narratives woven through your life, understanding how past experiences continue to shape your present reality. We will reconnect you to your power, build resiliency, and learn to use your voice to live your life more authentically. With a relationship built with trust and compassion, you're invited to explore your deepest truths, express your fears, and bravely write a new story for your life. Therapy is a collaborative journey, and your voice, experiences, and perspective are central to our work together. Depending on your needs, we'll examine how family, gender, culture, and social expectations have influenced your sense of self, relationships, and aspirations. I draw from a variety of frameworks including Feminist, Narrative, and Family Systems. Reaching out is hard. If it scares you, you're not alone. You may try considering if your fear is saying "now's not the right time" or if its something more akin to "what will this change in my life". Curiosity, excitement, & the adrenaline of taking "the next step" can feel scary. Whatever you decide, trust you're right on time in your own journey.

The inherent dignity and worth of every individual are guiding principles in the advocacy and counseling support I’ve helped develop with people for over 25 years. Challenges we all encounter can overwhelm our regular functioning and cause pain that distracts and obscures access to genuine joy and plans we all have for our best selves and relationships. Using evidence-based practices and focusing on self-determination, I listen and assist individuals with stabilizing their day-to-day functioning so they can plan and get closer to where they want to be in life and their relationships. I began here in East Lansing at the Listening Ear as a Crisis and Sexual Assault Counselor while in graduate school, and still sincerely value active listening and problem-solving. I’m a licensed clinical social worker, certified Michigan teacher and academic consultant. I’ve primarily worked with adults and youth in both clinical, high school and post-secondary settings.
We offer psychological testing to individuals aged 16 and older. We specialize in evaluations for ADHD, autism, and complex mental health concerns. Our owner, Dr. Jessi Manning, completed most of her training and the first 5 years of her career focused solely on college students, and she maintains a passion for this population. We are focused on neurodiversity and other aspects of diversity, especially in regard to sexual orientation and gender identity. You can begin the testing process by scheduling a free 15 minute phone consultation from the website.

I work best with students who carry a lot internally—people who seem put-together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected underneath. Many of the students I support are high achievers or deep feelers who worry about disappointing others, overthink decisions, or feel pressure to be “the strong one.” They’re often juggling school, relationships, family expectations, cultural or religious pressure, and their own inner world all at the same time. A lot of the students I connect with are navigating big transitions—figuring out who they are, questioning beliefs they grew up with, or trying to become their own person in the midst of complicated family dynamics. Some grew up in high-pressure homes, were the emotional caretaker in their family, or learned to hide their needs. Others are noticing patterns they don’t know how to change, like shutting down, feeling numb, feeling “too much,” or carrying stress in their bodies through tension, trouble sleeping, or difficulty concentrating. Many of my students are the quiet strugglers—the ones who rarely ask for help, apologize for having needs, or carry the emotional load for everyone else. They’re thoughtful, self-aware, and resilient, but exhausted. If you feel stuck between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming, or if you’re looking for a space where you don’t have to hold everything together, you’ll feel understood with me.

I believe that health and wellness are best achieved by addressing the whole person, not simply the condition, adverse event or illness/disease. This holistic approach to care respects the individuality of persons, their environments and their physical and emotional needs. The therapeutic relationship is important and necessary in order to move forward in your areas of stagnation. This collaborative effort will allow for exploration when determining which therapeutic approach best matches your identified goals based on symptoms, personality and experiences. My approach is collaborative, warm, engaging and directive. I utilize evidenced based practices and interventions to assist you in meeting your treatment goals and needs. We will develop realistic and obtainable goals along with skill building. Therapy is hard work! Building your best self takes time. I look forward in walking alongside you on this journey.
Being a student can be tough! Balancing classes, friends, and work while adjusting to a new living situation. Maybe even feeling less confident when we never struggled in that area before. Sometimes we don't recognize that we are struggling with anxiety or depression...and that there is help! If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, self-confidence, difficulties with managing emotions, I can help! You don't need to know how therapy works. We will talk and get to know each other, then sort out together the areas where you can grow strengths to match your new experience.

I draw from a variety of modalities to tailor our work to your unique needs, including person-centered therapy, emotionally focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems, attachment theory, and parts work. I also integrate polyvagal-informed practices to support nervous system regulation and emotional resilience. I work with individuals facing a wide range of challenges including anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, parenting, ADHD, autism, and struggles with self-worth. I also support clients exploring spirituality, managing stress, navigating attachment wounds, or untangling patterns of codependency. At the heart of my work is a deep respect for each person’s story. Whether you're seeking to understand yourself more fully, build healthier relationships, or simply need a safe space to process, I’m here to offer support, insight, and genuine curiosity along the way.
I offer virtual (online) sessions only at this time. Some sessions can be made by appointment if openings are not noted on my calendar - just ask! Sometimes the anxiety and depression that come with life changes, trauma, relationship issues or job stress can be distracting and affect our ability to thrive. When people work through their thoughts and feelings, they often report feeling more clarity and a deeper sense of vitality and purpose. You can expect to be gently challenged to explore your experiences in a safe, kind and private space when you work with me. I've helped people find more confident self expression in decision-making and relationships. I've also had people report performing better in sports, school or the arts. Many people find themselves making better, more positive behavioral changes as they feel better emotionally. I use an eclectic mix of theories, often including psychodynamic work, in therapy to include the entire person: mind, body and soul. I try to educate and empower people to use practical tools they learn in therapy in realistic, lifelong ways. It takes courage to be vulnerable and acknowledge you'd like some help along this journey. I know because I've been there myself. Take the first step and I'll meet you there.

I believe that a core piece of psychotherapy is coming to truly see yourself, and allowing others (the therapist, at first) to see you as well. I practice psychodynamic therapy, which means that I am curious about your emotions, your past experiences, the intricacies of your mind and unconscious, and your imagination. Some people need to be listened to in therapy, others need to be told certain things, and often people need a little of both. I try to discern what is needed by each patient as best I can.
Therapy isn’t just about getting through hard times, it’s an opportunity for you to reconnect with your own inner strength and move toward a life that feels more meaningful, grounded, and embodied. You might feel overwhelmed, stuck in a major life change, overthinking, or just tired of pretending you're okay. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Much of my work with clients involve exploring your thoughts, emotions, and physical experiences to deepen self awareness and support lasting change.
