Hi there, welcome to my profile. My name is Markia Hearst and I am a clinical social worker providing therapy in North Carolina. The services I provide are tailored to young adults dealing with past trauma, anxiety, depression, racial trauma, and life transitions. My style is laid back, warm, and professional. I hope to provide a safe space for you to be genuinely you without fear of nonacceptance. Feel free to reach out for a free consultation to see if we are a good fit for one another. I'm looking forward to meeting you.
I work with college students who are navigating anxiety, stress, and the pressure to “hold it all together” during an already demanding season of life. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based therapies, helping students understand their anxiety, develop effective coping skills, and build confidence in managing academic, relational, and personal challenges. I aim to provide a supportive space where students can feel understood, learn to calm their nervous system, and move forward with greater clarity and resilience.
You make it look so easy, but you are tired. Whether at work, at school, with family or with friends, you are often the person keeping everything together. No matter the task, you will get it done, but it has been exhausting putting your feelings and needs aside for the sake of everyone else. You know you need something different, but you aren’t sure what. The thought of saying “no” or revealing that you don’t have it all together is too scary. Oftentimes liberation is on the other side of scary… and you deserve liberation! I have a relaxed & casual approach. I believe genuine human connection is foundational to mental health and that with the encouragement of an authentic relationship, a judgement-free space, & a willingness to be vulnerable- you can freely explore new ways of engaging with the world. I want to help you find that “something different” you've been looking for. Let's create a space where you don’t have to have it all together. A place where you can take a rest from all the juggling you’ve been doing. If any of this resonates, let’s connect. Therapy doesn’t have to be daunting–it’s a journey, but we will take it on together. You’ve got this. You already know what you need– so let’s help you get there!

I specialize in working with college-age clients who grew up in chaotic or neglectful households. My clients often appear to have it all together- high-achieving, involved on campus, the friend everyone leans on. Despite this, they struggle with anxiety in relationships, fear of others' judgment, difficulty letting people get close, exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, and a sense of being lost or like an imposter, even when things look good on paper. Often, at the core of these struggles are unresolved wounds or narratives from early in life. During our most formative years, we adopt lasting beliefs about ourselves and the world- a blueprint we carry into adulthood. For many of my clients, that blueprint is resurfacing now, in the first real independence of college: new relationships, distance from family, and the pressure to figure out who they are outside of old roles. It shapes how they connect with roommates, partners, and friends, and how they handle the stress of exams, deadlines, and an uncertain future- often without their realizing it. These narratives, inherited from caregivers, family, or environment, become deeply ingrained and unconscious. While they may have helped us survive earlier in life, they can become counterproductive as we step into adulthood, creating invisible barriers to connection and well-being. Putting these thoughts into words in a safe space allows them to surface where they can be understood and rewritten.
Therapy with horses at Horse Sense is about being able to create and maintain a connected relationship. Our therapy utilizes both the physiology and psychology of the horse to heal the physiology and psychology of the human. This experiential therapy gets beyond simply talking about challenges and instead participants learn by doing, often reaching positive change more quickly than through traditional therapy approaches.

Does your life have many turns and twists? Do you struggle with Anxiety or Depression? Are you overwhelmed with life adjustments and conflicts? We all experience pain, grief, disappointment and heartbreak in life. How do we adjust to these challenges while life is still moving? I am glad that you are here seeking therapy and support. My responsibility as a therapist is to support individuals and families without judgment. One of the goals in therapy to build trust, integrity and a therapeutic connection to begin working towards empowering individuals to changing distorted thoughts, behaviors or challenges in a person’s life. I support individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, relational conflicts and trauma. I provide effective coping skills to manage daily life. I also engage with clients to empower effective mind altering thinking to improve results in behavior and choices. My focus is to provide individuals with support through the therapeutic process. Identifying and explore feelings, thoughts and behaviors are key to make life more enjoyable. As a therapist my goal is to provide a client with support with the process of breakthrough, healing, and empowerment to move forward in life with personal and professional relationships. Together, we will build a safe and trusting relationship to support your goal.
When you're struggling with an eating disorder, anxiety, or depression, the idea of opening up and trusting another person can be HARD. I know that you've likely heard so many messages throughout your life about what you should do and who you should be, but I don't think that "shoulds" have a place in therapy. Who do you WANT to be? How do you WANT to feel? That is way more important than any shoulds, and I would be honored to walk alongside you as you start to find answers to these questions over time. Together, we can unravel those expectations - what you've been told it means to be healthy or successful or fill in the blank - and get to the heart of what really matters to you and what you need. Being a human is messy, and as your therapist, I'll be right there in that space with you as a human first, therapist second. Let's explore what it means to be humans in a world that expects perfection (which doesn't exist!) and pushes you to grind until you're too burned out to do the things you actually want to do. Whether you realize it today or not, you deserve peace. I have many tools in my toolbox to support you, but to me the most important thing I can do is to provide you a safe space to explore your experience in its entirety at your own pace - to build a connection that is strong enough for you to know that I won't judge you or make you bad or wrong for how you are feeling or for using certain behaviors to cope. It's what you've known to do up to this point, so let's put our heads together and find the ways that this has made sense so we can look at it from a place of compassion instead of judgment. This is a shame-free space! I hold a special place in my heart for those who are working towards eating disorder recovery who feel like they aren't sick enough because their body size, race, sexuality, or gender identity don't match what they are seeing on social media under the eating disorder hashtags. All identities are welcome here, and no matter what your circumstances, your concerns are valid, you ARE sick enough, and you deserve compassionate, equitable care. If anything I've said here makes you think "I like her vibe," please don't hesitate to reach out. I would love to chat further about what it would look like for us to work together.
