Therapists for college students near New York University
Hi! My name is Alyssa Ammerman, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York. I received my Master of Social Work from the University at Buffalo in 2017 (GO BILLS!). I use an eclectic and person-centered approach to therapy. I have formal training in a variety of therapy modalities that I use at various times throughout the therapeutic relationship, with you as the guiding factor. I believe that each person’s experience is unique, and therapy should be a reflection of that. I enjoy working with individuals ages 18+ that are going through life transitions, dealing with anxiety, chronic illnesses, first responders, parents, and identify as a sex-positive, kink-friendly therapist.
Finding a therapist is difficult, it’s scary, and it can be overwhelming – there are so many different providers just on this site! I’m here to help. I’ll work with you to closely examine your past and present experiences to better your future. I promise you that in our sessions, I will bring empathy, honesty, collaboration, and an open mind. So, how do I practice? I’m an integrative therapist – I’m trained in psychodynamic therapy, and I use tools from other treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, when appropriate and to better serve you. Basically, I believe we need to journey together to explore what internal anxieties, traumas or experiences are causing you discomfort, pain, or just a general feeling of being “stuck.” And I’ll also work practically with you in the here and now to provide further insight and relief. Ultimately, the relationship between therapist and client is incredibly important to helping you achieve your goals. I’ll do my best to make you feel safe, seen, and heard. I’m honored that you’re willing to give this a chance, and I invite you to reach out for a free consultation to see if we’re a good match.

I work to create a calm, safe, trusting environment so that true growth can occur. I’m a licensed psychologist and have worked with college-age young adults for many years. I have a youthful energy and I believe in being a good and supportive listener. I utilize evidence-based cognitive-behavioral and acceptance and commitment therapy interventions to help young adults create and apply effective action plans in their life. I’m not interested in helping young adults merely admire their problems, is this usually results in remaining stuck. Instead, I work collaboratively to identify promising interventions to move our life forward towards desired goals. This, I find, is the only way for a person to build genuine confidence.

I am a New York–based Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with college students and young adults navigating anxiety, stress, emotional overwhelm, adjustment concerns, and life transitions. Many of the students I work with are high-achieving and capable, yet feel stuck in their heads, unsure of themselves, or emotionally reactive under pressure. Therapy can be a space to slow things down, make sense of what’s going on, and learn how to respond rather than just react. My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded. I combine insight-oriented therapy with skills-based strategies such as emotion regulation, mindfulness, and anxiety management tools that can be used in real-life situations—academics, relationships, family dynamics, and identity development. I tailor therapy to each student’s individual needs, goals, and pace, with attention to how stress and life experiences impact emotional well-being. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in other high-pressure environments, including Division I collegiate athletics and business settings, which informs my understanding of performance stress, identity shifts, and transition periods. In early sessions, my focus is on getting to know you, helping you feel understood, and offering feedback and tools you can apply outside of sessions. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply looking for clarity, therapy is a collaborative process, and I look forward to working with you.
