Therapists for college students near New York University
College can be an exciting time, but it can also bring unexpected stress, uncertainty, and change. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, relationships, identity, grief, trauma, or simply feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what comes next, you don’t have to navigate it alone. I offer a warm, supportive space to slow down, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and reconnect with yourself. Together, we’ll explore what may be keeping you feeling stuck and build tools to help you feel more grounded, confident, and connected. I use approaches including EMDR, IFS, and ACT, tailoring therapy to your needs and where you are in your journey.

Starting college or graduate school —or navigating your way through them—can be both exciting and overwhelming. Many students find themselves facing stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, identity questions, academic pressure, or major life transitions, often for the first time. You don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I specialize in working with college students and young adults, and I understand the unique pressures of university life—from managing expectations and finding your place, to coping with self-doubt, loneliness, or burnout. Whether you’re struggling or simply wanting to better understand yourself and grow, therapy can be a space where things begin to feel more manageable and more hopeful. My approach is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe that meaningful change happens in a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship, where you feel safe to be yourself and explore what’s really going on beneath the surface. Together, we’ll work at your pace to better understand your experiences, build resilience, and develop tools that help you move forward with greater confidence and clarity. I have over 15 years of experience in the mental health field, including working in university counseling centers, where I supported students through many of the challenges you may be facing now. I’ve worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities, and I am committed to creating an inclusive, affirming space where you feel seen and respected. I also have experience working with international students, students with disabilities and chronic health conditions, Deaf and hard of hearing students, and those navigating complex family or cultural dynamics. Reaching out for support can feel like a big step—but it can also be the beginning of feeling more like yourself again. You deserve support, understanding, and a space to grow. I would be honored to be part of that process with you.

Life transitions are my specialty and college is full of them! The pressures that students face can include feeling overwhelmed by college responsibilities, parent expectations, time management, career confusion, as well as "adulting" in general. Even social life can be a stressor. Some of my clients have found that past experiences or traumas have become obstacles to reaching their goals. It took many years of college to get where I am at, so I get that the struggle is real! I am available via teletherapy (video or phone), in office sessions, and offer text/email support as needed. I am here for you throughout the year - not just when school is in session. Call me today for a free consultation!

My clients say that they find my honest, warm, and straightforward approach to be refreshing and helpful. Whether you're dealing with relationship issues, school stress, or a sense of being stuck, these obstacles can trigger anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. The fear of judgment or the dread of something terrible happening can weigh heavily on your mind. High standards, whether self-imposed or external, might feel impossible to meet, leaving you feeling overwhelmed. You don't have to face these challenges alone. Together, we can develop effective strategies to help you embrace life fully, fostering a sense of control and freedom. I specialize in supporting adults and teens, particularly those who identify as LGBTQIA+ or performing artists, who are feeling anxious, sad, and overwhelmed. My approach helps manage anxiety, depression, ADHD, insomnia, and OCD, offering thoughtful conversations and practical tools to get you back to living fully. Finding the right therapist can be daunting, but I'm here to make the process easier. Call me Michael, not "Doctor Jacobs." I consider my approach to be direct, warm and less formal. I want you to know that I'm human too, and we're in this together. Reach out today to see if we're a good fit and take the first step towards getting better.

You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone. Maybe you grew up keeping the peace, managing everyone else's emotions, or shrinking yourself to avoid conflict, and now those same patterns are running your life. You overthink, you people-please, you second-guess yourself constantly. You are self-aware enough to know something is not working, and awareness alone has not changed it. These patterns have roots. Family wounds, early trauma, relationships that taught you it was not safe to be yourself. Insight goes a long way toward naming them and stops short of loosening them, which is not a failure of effort on your part. I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy, an eye movement therapy that works on the physical charge attached to a memory rather than the story about it. You do not have to describe what happened out loud. Most people notice a shift within one to five sessions, and I offer ART both in weekly therapy and as a single longer intensive session for students who want to resolve something specific without a semester-long commitment. I am also trained in EMDR and use a person-centered, strengths-based approach throughout. If you are ready to stop going through the motions and find out who you are when you are not managing everyone else, I would like to hear from you.
