I am a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York with over 25 years of experience working with college and graduate students to improve their quality of life. I create a safe, supportive environment in which to explore what may be creating obstacles to taking control, feeling better and having more satisfying relationships. When people are in pain or feel “stuck”, this can help to empower them to make changes that lead to a healthier life. I have extensive experience working with diverse clientele who experience depression and anxiety, family and parenting issues, and grief and loss. I also address challenges around life transitions, questions of identity, chronic illness, and work stress/conflict. Certified in EMDR, I am passionate about exploring how this treatment can help individuals heal from life experiences that continue to negatively impact them. Appreciating one’s culture, family background and life experiences is essential to understand a person’s perspective and values to gain insights. I am a caring and respectful clinician who works collaboratively with clients to achieve outcomes important to them. Goals for therapy are discussed intentionally so that people achieve a greater sense of wellbeing in measurable ways. The relationship between myself and my client is a true partnership.

My approach is influenced by C.G. Jung, Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning) Socratic dialogue, Buddhism and Quaker meetings. I work best with the person who sees their life as a journey of self-discovery. I will help you uncover the solutions that you already have and see the problematics of those solutions. I will help you listen to your muse, interpret your dreams, identify your interpersonal patterns and face the fears and anxieties that haunt you. I will treat your troubles with the utmost respect because they help you learn and grow. Gratitude softens pain. I find parallels between creativity & spiritual inspiration.

Hello, I am a therapist with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals across a range of settings. I spent the first 15 years of my career in a college counseling center, where I worked with students navigating both academic pressures and personal challenges. During that time, I also developed a specialized focus on supporting international students, with particular attention to cultural adjustment and the complexities of adapting to a new environment. I value creating a supportive, collaborative space where you can feel understood and work through challenges at your own pace. I look forward to partnering with you as you navigate your college experience.

My name is Cristal Sampson. I am the sole owner and healthcare provider at Spirit Clinic. A great way to describe what it’s like to work with me is through a term I’ve coined: mindful medication management. Mindful med management is an approach to psychiatric care that is attentive to the unique needs and concerns of each individual. It’s a collaborative process, where we work together to ensure that treatment decisions are made with your input and full understanding. At its core, this approach is relational, focusing on building trust and fostering open communication, so you feel supported every step of the way. It's also deeply considerate, acknowledging and respecting your personal experiences and preferences when it comes to treatment. Taking a holistic view, it goes beyond just addressing symptoms—encompassing your overall well-being, including emotional, physical, and social factors. Most importantly, it’s patient-led, meaning that you guide the process, and I’m here to help you find the best path toward better health, on your terms.

College is a time of real growth — and real pressure. For many students, it's also when questions about identity, mental health, and how they move through the world come into sharper focus. I work with college students who are navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, identity exploration, trauma history, or the particular exhaustion that comes with being neurodivergent in demanding academic environments. Many of the young adults I work with are autistic, ADHD, or both — and are often doing so without the scaffolding that got them through high school. Others are transgender or gender-diverse, and are figuring out who they are while managing minority stress, family dynamics, and systems that don't always make things easy. My approach is relational and collaborative. I don't follow a rigid protocol — I draw from ACT, DBT, and CBT, and I tailor what we do to who you are and what you actually need. Sessions are a place to build insight, develop real skills, and figure out how to live more fully as yourself. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with advanced training in gender-diverse care, trauma, and neurodevelopment. Before opening my practice, I spent two years at Yale's Pediatric Gender Program and completed my doctoral internship at Yale School of Medicine. I keep my caseload focused so I can do this work with the depth it deserves. Sessions are available via telehealth across Connecticut and New York, and in person in Southington, CT — which may be convenient for students at nearby colleges and universities. I also see adolescents and teens, so referrals for younger clients are welcome. I'm happy to connect with counseling center staff to discuss fit, coordination of care, or consultation. The best way to reach me is through my website or by phone.
