College can be fun and extremely challenging at the same time. It is a major step in your life and it comes with many new life transitions and independence! Many students I work with experience anxiety, stress, and feelings of overwhelm as they navigate academic pressures, social changes, and personal development. They may also struggle with issues related to self-esteem, identity, and relationships. Students often benefit from a supportive and understanding environment where they can explore their feelings, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. My approach focuses on helping students gain clarity, build confidence, and create a balanced and fulfilling college experience. By addressing their specific needs and experiences, I aim to empower students to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

I start with listening and seek to cultivate a perspective that enlivens, enlightens and unburdens. I use an integrative psychoanalytic approach founded in curiosity and collaboration to address problems relating to trauma, depression, anxiety or self-esteem that can undermine ones ability to thrive interpersonally, creatively, sexually or professionally. Whether it's a life-change, a search for meaning, creative blocks, frustration with the quality of relationships or something else, I will meet you there. Through listening and talking, we will explore internal experience and how it impacts relating to oneself and others. Beyond psychoanalysis. I am also a trained attachment-based EMDR therapist, a powerful modality to process trauma when words don't seem to cut it. I may also use CBT & mindfulness training. These approaches can help develop an ability to detect unhelpful thinking styles, a stronger mind to body connection, and an increased awareness in the present. To give you a chance to practice outside our sessions, I encourage meditation and journaling. With a background in anthropology, I have a special interest in how culture shapes each of us, and always consider the impact of your culture in context with the struggles you face.

You're smart. You've always figured things out. So why does it feel like your emotions are the one thing you can't get a handle on? Maybe you've got the grades, the group chat, the schedule packed with things you're "supposed" to want... and still find yourself lying in bed at 2am wondering why everything feels so heavy. That's actually exactly the kind of thing I work on with you in therapy. I'm Mallory Grimste, LCSW, a therapist based in Branford, CT who specializes in working with teens, college students, and young adults who are emotionally overwhelmed and high-achieving at the same time. (Yes, both. It's more common than you think.) I use a DBT-informed approach, which basically means I teach real, practical strategies- the kind you can actually use when you're about to crash out before a big exam or spiraling after a hard conversation. We can work on anxiety, depression, self-esteem, identity, and navigating relationships — including the one you have with yourself. My clients don't just feel better in session. They leave treatment feeling more confident in who they are, more capable of handling the hard stuff, and genuinely proud of how far they've come. I offer telehealth sessions in Connecticut and New York, and in-person sessions in Branford, CT. If that sounds like what you've been looking for, I'd love to connect. 👉 Learn more and apply to work together: mallorygrimste.com/counseling-services

My integrative approach as a therapist means I'll always be responsive to your reasons for being in therapy and what you want to find. I have an open, exploratory style, but I also won't hesitate to share more concrete resources or suggest practices to test out in between sessions if we decide together it might help.

I am trained in EMDR and attend monthly consultation with a certified EMDR consultant. Many people come to me with knowledge or curiosity of stored trauma in the body and its effects. This can look like persistent anxiety, "unexplained" health challenges like autoimmune disease, pelvic pain, abdominal pain and more. Additionally, clients will come to me and say that despite years of talk therapy they still feel stuck and want to explore how EMDR may be helpful for them. EMDR is an 8 phase process that doesn't have a specific timeline; it is catered to your needs and goals and progress is closely monitored throughout.

My approach is influenced by C.G. Jung, Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning) Socratic dialogue, Buddhism and Quaker meetings.
