Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. – Soren Kierkegaard Reaching out for help to deal with the struggles of life can be scary. I applaud you for taking the first step in your journey. I like to think of therapy as a safe space to be you, the real authentic you. I am passionate about working with individuals looking to improve aspects of life that are less than desirable. My goal for the client’s therapeutic process is to assist and support with understanding their needs, and coping with issues of communication, life stressors, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, trauma, or other needs. I use psycho-educational strategies and mindfulness-based practices to help you reduce your stress and anxiety while resolving issues. Therapy is a partnership and you are the expert. I am here to help guide you toward your goals. I received my Master of Science in Social Work from The University of Louisville. I have past experiences with family preservation, crisis, domestic violence, children, couples, older adults, and young adults. I am passionate about my work with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, and more.

Emotional peace and freedom are possible, whatever storm you may find yourself in. I work with adults navigating life transitions, relational conflict, family stressors, and who want to know themselves more deeply. So often there are a multitude of factors at play- relationships, academics, work, culture, and more- and therapy can be a place to explore how these impact thoughts, feelings, experiences, and your sense of self. It is my hope and commitment to create a space where exploring your challenges and goals can allow for the kind of growth and peace you want in your life and relationships.

We can manage your prescription and medications. Our Care Philosophy: I believe the best care comes from building a strong partnership with my patients. I take time to listen closely to each person’s story, value their input, and work with them to create a treatment plan that fits their goals and lifestyle. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and focused on empowering patients to take an active role in their mental health. I explain treatment options clearly, answer questions in plain language, and encourage open communication so patients feel comfortable and informed every step of the way. I also believe in meeting patients where they are—whether that means adjusting care to match their pace or providing extra education and resources to help them feel confident. Above all, my goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care in a safe and respectful environment where patients feel heard, understood, and supported on their journey toward healing and wellness.

Hey there, I'm really glad you're here. Let me tell you a bit about why therapy is so meaningful to me. I began my own journey into therapy when I was younger, facing similar struggles to what you might be experiencing now. It wasn't easy, but therapy became my light during those tough times. It showed me that even in the midst of darkness, there's hope and room for joy. Now, I'm here to offer you that same support and guidance. If you're ready to take that step, I'm here to walk alongside you, helping you find the tools you need to feel better. I work with people ages 18 and up who are dealing with challenges such as anxiety and depression. Maybe you're struggling with relentless panic attacks, or perhaps it's the constant weight of worry and uncertainty. Whatever it is, please know that you're not alone. I'm here to listen, to understand, and to help you reclaim your life, step by step. Here's what you can expect from our time together: a safe, judgment-free space where you can share your story and explore your emotions. It's about building trust and working together towards your goals. From learning relaxation techniques to finding ways to silence negative thoughts, we'll tackle things at your pace. I will assign homework, teach you tools, tips, and skills. My goal is to empower you.Throughout our therapeutic journey, you can expect a professional and empathetic approach grounded in evidence-based techniques. You're invited to a confidential and non-judgmental environment where you can freely explore your emotions and experiences. In my 25 years of clinical work, the majority of my clients want to solve a problem(s) or gain control of their life. Seeking out therapy can be difficult for a multitude of reasons. Reaching out to a therapist is similar to reaching out to a physician, chiropractor or physical therapist; healing! In therapy, you decide the goals you want to reach. I can assist you in determining your goals, if you're not sure of the starting point. The choice is yours! I'm trained in multiple therapies, modalities and wholistic care. I utilize a mix to assist clients in their problem solving/healing process. I specialize in trauma/PTSD, dementia, addictions and cancer. I also work with anxiety, depression, life stressors (work, family, school, health), chronic pain and life transition/adjustments. Life is like a beach, it's different everyday. The sand shifts, the waves vary in size & intensity and the weather is out of our control. We can choose to take a walk, search for rocks, swim, kite surf or bask in the sun. Learn how to ride the waves of life and be the captain of your ship. Choose your journey.

My name is Carolyn Roath. I am a Biblically informed Christian therapist, Master of Clinical Social Work, and owner of my own private telehealth practice. I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University. My heart for those grieving relational loss and trauma has led me to this work. As a follower of Christ, I seek to create a safe and nurturing environment where the client knows they are free from judgment. It is paramount for me that I hold the vulnerable, tender, and painful parts of my client’s being with dignity and respect. Being trusted by a client is an honor I take very seriously. In my work I strive to empower my clients to be self-led, while gently guiding them with questions to prompt self-reflection. I resonate strongly with attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, and Interpersonal Neurobiology utilizing a strength-based approach. I perceive my role as continually validating clients while helping them process, synthesize, and analyze information through active listening.

Navigating life as a young adult and all the stress and mental health challenges that come with it makes this the right time to reach out. It takes real courage to be here and to show up for yourself. Experiencing personal struggles, relationship issues and loss impact how we see ourselves and the world around us. Together we will create a space of trust where it is safe to be vulnerable. In a space where you feel seen, heard and understood is where you will then be able to create change. I am eager to support you on your journey of personal change.

I am currently accepting clients on a short-term basis for crisis counseling. Sliding scale and pro bono services available. My availability is flexible and I offer in person (East Lansing) and Telehealth. I work to help people navigate their complex worlds in order to live a healthier, happier life. I believe that all components of one's life are interrelated. Stress, crisis, life changes and uncertainty happen to everyone, often without warning. When crisis or chaos strike, it is comforting to have someone listen in a safe, open, non-judgmental space in which you can uncover the inner strengths and skills you already possess. I work with clients to create this environment, through which genuine healing, change, and self-empowerment can occur.

Everyone lives a diverse, intersectional existence with idiosyncratic experience. Acknowledging this means relating to others with inclusivity, openness, and humility. This philosophy not only humanizes students, many of whom identify as marginalized community members (e.g., BIPOC, LGBTQ+, accessibility needs, low-SES), but also honors their authenticity. Thus, I practice from an existential-humanistic-relational lens so I can naturally tailor therapy with evidence-based techniques (e.g., CBT, SFT, ACT) and psychological theories (e.g., identity, attachment, multicultural) necessary for understanding students’ intersectionality. I typically work with students experiencing elevated anxiety and depression, while specializing in identity development, interpersonal dynamics (e.g., relating to others), relational trauma, and existential concerns (e.g., authenticity, choice, meaning). Early sessions help form a therapeutic alliance, revealing underlying issues that manifest as psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma). From there, we identify coping skills, foster hope, and alleviate symptoms as you gain insight-oriented feedback. We also collaborate to explore, discover, and empower actions for you to become the most authentic version of self. The modern world is daunting, with a pace and pivot difficult to navigate. The rapid spin of sudden chaos. Steady drift of aimless wander. Dead still of eternal stagnation. As a serving spirit, I provide a healthy space for students to be and become that who they are and will be. Here, all are welcome. Here… all are an expression of hope and self-empowerment.
