Starting college — or just trying to get through it — can bring up a lot: Am I doing this right? Do I even belong here? Who am I becoming? I’d love to help you figure it out. Together we can work through the stress of adjusting to a new place, academic and social anxiety, career uncertainty, drinking or eating patterns that feel hard to shake, or trauma that’s still asking to be understood. I especially enjoy working with students nearing graduation who are wrestling with what comes next — career direction, next steps, and the identity shift that comes with leaving college behind. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years as a professor, and my research focused on identity and belonging — so I have a real passion for working with students exploring who they are, especially those navigating race, class, gender, or sexuality, or who just feel like they’re on the outside looking in. I bring both that academic background and genuine warmth to our work together.

I've had the privilege of walking alongside clients in their healing journeys and have found that, for many whose trust (in others and in themselves) has been shaken, finally feeling heard and understood serves as a powerful corrective experience. I believe that these experiences are crucial in facilitating personal growth and change. I recognize that all clients have unique strengths, and I build upon these to create a working alliance that is non-judgmental, empowerment-based, and client-focused. Many feel alienated not only in their struggles but in their pursuit of wellbeing, especially when they have not received a great deal of support in making the changes they desire. I am honored to provide such support and join clients on their paths toward healing. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults in the treatment of trauma, complex PTSD, attachment, anxiety, and depression. I am trained in and often utilize trauma-focused interventions including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Forward-Facing Trauma Therapy (FFTT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). I also frequently employ solution-focused, cognitive behavioral, and emotional regulation strategies in my practice, depending on each client’s unique needs.

I may be a good fit for you if you struggle with intrusive unwanted thoughts, feel like you need follow specific mental or physical rituals to feel "ok," or avoid situations that trigger your fears. Deb Powell knows life can be really challenging under the best of circumstances, sometimes we can get stuck and need some help to move forward or to get back on track. I want to work with people to help them to realize their own therapeutic goals, identify their own strengths and overcome the barriers that will help them to move forward. Everyone is different with different needs, so I utilize a number of different approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing. I believe that therapy is a partnership where you and I work together to achieve your chosen goals. While I can draw upon my skills, experience, education and training to offer coping skills, new perspectives, and options, I believe that you are the expert in your own lived experience. I understand that you may be new to therapy, or have had negative experiences with therapy in the past. I hope to offer a safe space through non-judgmental, compassionate responses to help you overcome the challenges you are facing. I have 26 years of experience providing advocacy for survivors of domestic violence from diverse backgrounds. I have supported numerous survivors who have experienced anxiety, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and/or systems-induced trauma (trauma induced from the criminal legal system, the family courts, and CPS). I have been a member of Reimagining Transformative Community Services since 2020, a group dedicated to building community capacity to address harms as an alternative to systems that create more harm. I have been licensed in Clinical and Macro Practice since 2014. I grew up in Lansing, MI. I still live in the area because there is a lot to do here, yet it only takes 15-20 minutes to get anywhere by car. I love to cook and spend time with my dog. My dream job is to be a stay-at-home dog mom. Until then, I work to normalize therapy, help people get to better places in their lives, and advocate for community care in addition to self-care.
