Welcome! Starting counseling is not easy and by coming here you have taken an important first step. This is meant to be a safe and non-judgmental space. I am a licensed master social worker with a wide variety of life experiences which have given me the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I am continually working to expand my therapeutic knowledge and skills in order to offer clients the right treatment for individual needs. That said I do embrace aspects of “positive psychology”. I like to accentuate what is right with you and not focus only on what is “wrong” with you. I have specialized training in Infant Mental Health, several behavioral therapies (DBT, CBT, ACT, MBCT), Child Parent Psychotherapy, and trauma informed therapies. I lean towards the so called “third wave” cognitive behavioral therapies which include concepts such as acceptance and mindfulness. I have experience treating people with a range of challenges including but not limited to depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, grief and loss, PTSD and trauma. I believe that everyone has the capacity to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. Sometimes we face challenges and barriers which may seem overwhelming. Therapy can help identify the source of these challenges and how to overcome them. Currently I work with adults and couples, and accept most major insurances.
I specialize in working with adolescents, teenagers, college students, and young adults struggling with anxiety, self-esteem, and stress, specifically related to their relationships and school functioning. I help clients reflect, access their strengths, and challenge negative mindsets, guiding them to make choices aligned with their values. I look forward to connecting with you to help you grow into the best version of yourself!

Hello! I serve adolescent and adult clients from a variety of backgrounds who all are seeking freedom from stress and overwhelm. Some are burnt-out and exhausted because they have high-expectations for themselves and struggle with self-care. Some have experienced childhood trauma or challenges in relationships. Some are so overwhelmed they default to avoidance-numbing with doom scrolling, binge-watching, or staying too busy. Some numb themselves with drugs and alcohol to cope. They all want to heal and be free from the patterns they experience. I would love to help you in your journey too!
Marlene Lathrop, LMSW, CSW, BCD is a Board Certified therapist specializing in working with “Women Who Love Too Much” and Couples counseling with an emphasis on the power of communication.

Prior to Covid-19 I began working with telehealth and moved towards seeing everyone from their own home to remove the barrier of the commute. Additionally I see people living in rural areas for specific needs such as gender dysphoria. My experience includes addressing trauma/PTSD, substance use/abuse and recovery, anxiety, depression, transgender and gender dysphoria, and LGBTQ+ issues for adolescents and adults as an ally. After starting a career in higher education, I realized that I wanted more opportunities to spend time with students 1:1 and support them through all of the life changes that occur throughout college: deciding on a major, finding new friends, separating from family, changing majors, figuring out how to adult, starting a career, excelling in classes that only become more rigorous, and maybe changing majors again. All of this in addition to finding time for yourself becomes quite difficult! As a psychotherapist, I work with students experiencing depression and anxiety as they navigate the challenges and stressors that come with being in college. Many have also had difficult or traumatic experiences while growing up, and are ready to figure out how to talk about them. Through weekly appointments, we'll build a therapeutic relationship grounded in trust, and quickly develop an understanding of your goals for therapy. For some, this will mean our work together is brief. For others, we'll settle into a long-term working relationship that will see you through the ups and downs over the next few years. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach in therapy, which means we'll explore your inner thoughts and feelings to understand how they affect your behaviors and relationships. I find that this approach helps you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, including how you might get in your own way from time to time and what you might want to do differently. Always, the goal is to support you as you (re)discover your strengths and learn to accept yourself as human, making both life and college a little easier to navigate moving forward. Please note: I'm licensed to see individuals in Florida, Illinois, and Michigan.
